Does your business need an AI receptionist?

Voice AI is having a moment. That doesn't mean every business needs it. Here's an honest way to tell.

An AI receptionist answers your phone in a natural voice, at any hour. It can greet callers, answer the common questions, book the appointment, take a message, and text the caller back. The good ones sound human and hand off to you when a call needs you.

It pays for itself when

  • Your phone is your front door. Locksmiths, plumbers, clinics, auto shops, salons. A missed call is a missed job that goes to the next name on the list.
  • Calls come after hours. The 9pm lockout, the Sunday booking. If nobody's there to answer, that's revenue walking.
  • You're busy doing the work. Under a car, with a client, behind the chair. You can't stop to answer, and voicemail loses people.
  • The same questions eat your day. Hours, prices, "are you open," "can you fit me in." A good agent handles those so you don't.

It's probably not worth it when

  • You're a walk-in business with almost no calls. A busy corner store doesn't have a phone problem. Its money leaks are elsewhere, like the invoices.
  • Every call genuinely needs your judgment. If nothing can be answered or booked without you, an agent just adds a step. (Most businesses overestimate this.)

The honest test

Ask yourself: how many calls did I miss last week, and what's one job worth? If you missed five calls and a job is worth $200, that's a $1,000 question, every week. An AI receptionist costs a fraction of that, and far less than a part-time person who still goes home at five.

One rule we hold to: the agent always discloses it's an AI, and it hands off to a human the moment a caller needs one. It's a front desk, not a wall.
